Buckle up and grab some snacks: Up Here has just announced the first wave of artists that will be in Sudbury for their 10th edition, running August 15 to 18, 2024—yep, it starts on the Thursday. 

It’s been five short months since Up Here 9, and it feels like it was just yesterday and also a million years ago. As we suffer through the seven long months until next year (Up Here 10!), we found ourselves looking at one of the special projects from last year: Polaroid portraits of the festival by our intrepid junior photographers—Tommy and Liz.

Katie Green’s eerie but whimsical watercolour personas somehow blend daintiness and grit, pleasure and pain, grief and joy in colourful smears that put any bouquet to shame.

Yung Yemi made his way north (from Toronto) to give us one of his Afro-futuristic portraits that marry intersectional concepts and ideologies from pre-colonial times to present day, across regions, religions, and political lines for this year’s festival.

Festivals are for fun, and it’s not always fun thinking about things that could go wrong, but by keeping safety in mind, we actually maximize funness for all! Truly!

West Coast Métis artist Jean Paul Langlois’ cinematic, Western-meets-Sci Fi-meets-Sunday morning cartoon-ness with both Indigenous and settler undertones.

Sudburian-turned-Torontonian, Franco-Ontarian-Métis multidisciplinary artist Maxine Lemieux is bringing her fantastical world-building aesthetic home for Up Here 9.

JUURI transforms bare walls into powerful, Japanese-themed artspaces. This week, she took a few minutes to talk to us about what inspires her and what she thinks about while she’s painting!

We teamed up with photographer Braeden Martel and curated a photography installation centred around those historic, faded ghost murals scattered throughout Sudbury.
