Our Stupid Little Buttons

What started out as stickers and magnets turned into stupid little buttons that were shipped and worn around the world.

Sudbury has a lot in common with other small cities in Canada, but we are a bit different, a bit unique … Stompin’ Tom Connors wrote a hit song “Sudbury Saturday Night,” describing our culture as something unique, something that stood out when he travelled across  Canada and beyond. And the TV show Shoresey is literally a love letter to our city.

What makes us so unique?

We have a Big Nickel, a dead wolf on a wire at our hometown arena, and a world-renowned science lab 2 km underground (I am looking at you SnoLab). Many of us are half French and half English. We embrace our grittiness, but we’ve done some of the most impressive regreening in the world.

Our stupid little buttons were created to both own and poke fun at Sudbury’s features and flaws, with tongue firmly in cheek. We’re pretty sure you like them, because we’ve made close to 20,000 and shipped them around the world with locals, expats, tourists, and even some Shoresy fans proudly wearing them.

Here are some favourites from over the years:

Regreen Our Hearts

Sudbury is known for its beautiful trail systems, bike routes, and walking paths. But, before our regreening programming 50 years ago, it was a lot of rock and missing the vibrant green landscape that surrounds our city today. We pay homage to the many who helped regreen Sudbury and continue to today.

Born in the Rainbow Hospital

You love it or hate it, a hospital built in 1946 is now a beautiful rainbow with butterflies. In a way, it continues to spread love to those who were born, received treatment, or passed away there. What a way to pay homage to a place that means so much to so many.

I am French but Don’t Speak

Raise your hand if you have a French name but we all pronounce it in English because you don’t speak French. Clearly, it’s more common than we think. Or if your first language is French but you have an English last name.

I Peed In Ramsey | I Pooed In Ramsey | I Skinny Dipped In Ramsey
Listen, we have all done it at some point in our lives (well, the first and third, hopefully not the second …). Sudbury is unique, with a massively beautiful and accessible lake in the middle, and sometimes things are going to happen. So, we say embrace it and wear your badge of honour proudly around Sudbury and beyond (again, except the second one).

Save Sudbury, With Sudbury, From Sudbury

This was We Live Up Here’s mission since day one, and none of this couldn’t happen without the countless hours of support from others in Sudbury. Together, we see the possibilities, the opportunities—so lets make things happen together.

This August, our team can’t wait to celebrate the 10th edition of Up Here and continue to make new stupid little buttons about our hometown we love/hate to bits!
