Festival sparkle: how to enjoy installations

Installations add a sparkle to the festival. Here’s how to make the most of them.

When someone mentions Up Here, perhaps you think first of a summer weekend bursting with new music or discovering a pop-up show that brings something unexpected to a well-known place or invites you someplace new. Maybe your thoughts jump to walls that become massive canvases welcoming new artwork by artists near and far. Or maybe your mind pauses on the installations that are created and scattered about like Easter eggs waiting to be found. These are unexpected pockets of joy that people stumble upon or seek out that add so much to a festival experience.

After years of helping artists bring their installations to life, and visiting these reimagined spaces during the fest, there are so many moments that stand out. I have some thoughts on how to make the most of this beloved third wheel of the festival program. Here goes.

Add ’em to your list

Over the years, the installations have become a well-worn corner of the festival programming, and our team makes a handy list of them on the app and online so you can peek through and see what weirdness awaits you each year. Check them out before you go.

Make time to explore

Add a little extra time to your schedule so you can grab a map, download the app, or make a list to scratch off each of these little nuggets. Some you will draw you in and keep you there—don’t fight that feeling. Give yourself some time to experience the art and get lost in the installations. You won’t regret it.

Visit day and night

One of the things about art installations that can make them feel magical is the different tones they take on during the night and the day. If you visit during the day, make sure to come back at night—some art comes to life in the evening. Don’t tell anyone, but this year, there are digital pieces on the docket that will transform some spaces after dark.

Plan to play

Installations add that extra oomph and can put a bounce in your step after you discover something unexpected. Some have interactive elements that you can have fun with, others will become the backdrop for surprise musical shows or out-of-the-blue activations. Give yourself permission to stay a while and have fun, or use them as your own photo backdrops!
